Liverpool-bound Giorgi Mamardashvili claims Vinicius Jr REFUSED to pay up after penalty bet in shock Real Madrid loss – on huge night in La Liga title race

Valencia won away at Real Madrid for the first time since 2008 on Saturday in an eventful game for Vinicius Junior.

The Brazilian failed to convert a penalty kick at 0-0 in the first half before scoring an equaliser in the 50th minute to cancel out Mouctar Diakhaby’s opener for the visitors.

But Valencia left the Bernabeu with all three points after a stoppage-time winner scored by former Madrid youngster Hugo Duro.

Vinicius stepped up to the penalty spot in the 13th minute after Kylian Mbappe had been fouled by Cesar Tarrega.

Goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, who has agreed to join Liverpool from Valencia at the end of the season, dived down to his left and saved the spot-kick with his legs.

Speaking to reporters after the game, Mamardashvili revealed that his penalty save had won him a €50 (£42.52) bet.

‘I won 50 euros,’ he told journalists, before being asked to explain more.

He added: ‘I asked him if he wanted to bet 50 euros and he said yes, so I won. He was supposed to pay after the match…’

However, when asked if Vinicius had paid up, Mamardashvili, replied: ‘No, no, no.’

Mamardashvili – who made eight saves in total on Saturday – went on to concede that the decision to award the penalty had been a fair one.

Madrid’s shock defeat in the afternoon gave La Liga title rivals Barcelona the chance to move six points clear at the top of the table later in the day.

But Barca were only able to draw 1-1 with Real Betis at Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys, leaving the distance between Spain’s two great clubs ts four points with eight rounds of fixtures remaining. Gavi gave Xavi’s side an early lead before Natan hit back for Betis.

Liverpool sealed the signing of Mamardashvili in a deal worth £29million in August last year.

He will move to Anfield this summer and is widely seen as the long-term successor to current Reds No 1 Alisson Becker.

Liverpool moved to secure Mamardashvili’s signature after he shone for Georgia at Euro 2024 in Germany.

Mamardashvili, who is now 24, was particularly impressive in Georgia’s 2-0 win over Portugal, during which he made five saves.
